Rachel-for the analysis of our short story collection is it okay to include a kind of personal response as well? Sheehan's stories have the same themes I'm interested in writing about.

Sure! Putting in a personal element would be fine with me, just as long as there is also some analysis and discussion of some of the craft points. Perhaps you could talk about why you are so drawn to her writing, and then how you might "steal" some of the techniques she uses to address similar themes.
